Workshop Samples
The following photos are from some of the workshops I have instructed,all the samples are by students.
These photos are from "The Art of Collage on Canvas Workshop" which was held at Akron University in March 2006.
Students learned to create backgrounds,and compositions.We also touched on copyright laws. We talked about the intuitive approach to creating art.Students created several works of Art using Acrylic paints, encaustic paints,paper beeswax and gel mediums , miscellaneous papers, fibers,photographs and found objects.

Workshops offered include:
The Art of Collage on Canvas Class length 6 hours long with 1 hour for lunch.

I will cover, a brief history of Collage, creating backgrounds and compositions. In this workshop I will teach you 4 basic structures of composition and how to use your intuition. I will teach a few methods for creating backgrounds, I will touch on copyright laws. I will provide information on the National Collage Society and the International Collage Museum in Cuernavaca, Mexico. I will also give tips on how to exhibit and submit your art to juried shows. During the workshop you will make several collages.
Fee: $120.00 + $10.00 use of class materials

Found Object Jewelry / Creative Metals 101
Class length 6 hours long with 1 hour for lunch.
This Class explores the unexpected in jewelry making, we will use found objects to create peices of "Wearable Art". Start collecting odds and ends, bottle caps, pieces of plastic, buttons, words and pictures etc... anything goes. We will begin with conditioning the metal to include sanding, filing and incorporating various techniques such as windows, transfers, and mica tiles. We will be riveting and wire-wrapping to create cold connections and possible stapling and torch soldering (depending on fire codes), to put these pieces together. You will make a bracelet, necklace or earrings or all of the above.
Materials Needed for Class: Students are urged to bring a basic metals toolkit including, ball peen hammer, metal or tin-snips , wire-working tools. Optional: jewelers saw, metal files, beads, gemstones and wire. I will have materials available for purchase including wire, sheet metal, rivets, acrylic sheet etc...

Found Object Jewelry/Creative Metals 102 (Etching, Soldering & Beyond) Copyright August 2006Cheryl Strait

Class price $120.00 per person + $30.00 kit (payable directly to instructor)
A kit will be available for purchase from the instructor for $30.00
The kit includes sterling silver sheet, bezel wire a gemstone ,resin cabochon and metal sheet.
There will also be some supplies available for purchase during class.
Course Overview
We will explore surface techniques and soldering for, use in jewelry making and beyond.
You will learn techniques to color and etch metal, including chemical etching and using a hand tool. Basic soldering techniques will also be included, bezel setting with both wire and sheet solder. Students will also learn reticulation and we will be working with chemicals, and an acetylene torch so please wear appropriate clothing, if you are pregnant please consult your physician with any concerns. Students will create several pieces for use in wearable art and beyond.

Workshop Title: “Rings on my Fingers and Bells on my Toes”

In this workshop students will learn to create rings from Sterling Silver/ (sheet, wire) mixed metals (including Copper and Brass), gemstones and found objects. Students will learn how to size a ring and Cheryl will lead the workshop with demonstrations in soldering with sheet and wire solder, reticulation, bezel setting, and metal stamping for design, with a patina finish.
